We've all been there: some days you enjoy a glass of wine and aged cheese without a single issue. Other days, a completely ordinary meal leads to a rash, a migraine, or flushing within an hour.

Histamine Bucket: Everything You Need to Know

The culprit is the cumulative effect of histamine—what we call the Histamine Bucket. Our newly upgraded algorithm in Histamin.io goes far beyond basic food math: it fully respects how histamine behaves in a real human body.

Let’s take a look under the hood to see how the new calculation helps you better understand your body’s signals.

1. Food Is More Than Just a Name: Portion & Freshness Matter

Every food item in the app has a base histamine risk level (suitable, caution, unsuitable). However, the new algorithm factors in two vital real-world details:

  • Portion Size: A small portion of a risky food creates much less burden than a large plate.

  • Freshness & Reheating: Histamine levels build up over time. Storing or reheating meals increases their load by 50%. For protein-rich foods (meat, fish, seafood, poultry), reheating actually doubles the histamine load.

When logging meals in your diary, adjust the portion size or mark whether the food was reheated or stored.

2. Daily Factors: Why Your Body Reacts Even Without Food

Your body produces histamine internally. When you face stress, poor sleep, illness, allergies, or PMS, your internal histamine levels rise automatically.

In the new model, these daily factors have a two-fold impact:

  1. Direct Load: Even if you don’t log any food all day, severe stress or illness will still partially fill your bucket.

  2. Multiplier Bump: Factors act as a "sensitivity multiplier." When you are stressed and sleep-deprived, even a mildly risky meal will affect you much more than on a calm day.

Note: Stacking multiple factors uses additive logic so that having a stressful PMS day won't cause your bucket to "snowball" into unrealistic numbers, keeping the math scientifically grounded.

3. Tailored to You: Personalized Bucket Capacity

Everyone’s capacity for breaking down histamine is different. Once you complete your physiological profile (age, sex, height, and weight), the app calculates a personalized bucket capacity:

  • Sex & Age: We account for natural enzymatic and hormonal differences (such as estrogen fluctuations or the gradual decrease in enzyme production as we age).

  • Body Constitution (BMI): Underweight individuals have a smaller body fluid volume, meaning their bucket overflows sooner. For obesity, capacity is slightly adjusted downward rather than upward, as excess adipose tissue generates micro-inflammation rather than additional histamine-degrading enzymes.

If your profile isn't fully completed yet, the app seamlessly defaults to a balanced, universal standard capacity.

4. The 48-Hour Histamine "Hangover"

Histamine doesn't magically vanish at midnight. If you fill your bucket in the evening, you carry a portion of that burden into the next morning.

The new system incorporates a 48-hour carryover:

  • You start today with 40% of yesterday's remaining load.

  • Plus 10% of the load from two days ago.

If you had a heavy weekend, the app will accurately show that you're starting Monday morning with a partially filled bucket, signaling that you should tread carefully.

5. Recorded Reactions: Real-World Evidence Override

Sometimes you might eat "safe" foods yet still experience a flush or a migraine due to underlying inflammation.

Whenever you log a physical reaction, the algorithm treats it as hard evidence that your tolerance was exceeded:

  • Mild Reaction (Severity 1): Instantly sets a floor under your bucket at min. 60% (Caution Zone).

  • Moderate Reaction (Severity 2): Sets a floor at min. 80% (Red High Zone).

  • Severe Reaction (Severity 3): Sets a floor at 100% (Full Overflow).

This ensures the bucket immediately reflects how your body actually feels, overriding any low food estimates.

6. How DAO Enzyme Supplements Help

When you log a DAO enzyme supplement and experience no reaction that day, the app applies a two-stage relief:

  1. It reduces the calculated load from all meals that day by 25%.

  2. It subtracts a flat 15 percentage points directly from your final bucket total.

Please note: If you record a reaction despite taking DAO, the relief is not applied. A physical reaction is clear evidence that the enzyme dose was insufficient for that day's total burden.

Understanding Your Bucket Levels

  • 🟢 0 – 39% (Low Load): You are in the safe zone. Your body is comfortably processing histamine.

  • 🟠 40 – 79% (Medium Load): Caution—your bucket is filling up. Avoid risky foods and take it easy.

  • 🔴 80%+ (High Load / Overflow): Your tolerance limit has been reached or exceeded. Prioritize fresh, low-histamine foods and rest.
