A biogenic amine formed during the breakdown of proteins, plays a role in immune reactions and digestion.

Histamine is a biogenic amine that is formed by decarboxylation of the amino acid histidine. It has many functions in the body, including involvement in immune and allergic reactions, regulation of digestion and as a neurotransmitter. In histamine intolerance, there is an excessive accumulation of histamine in the body, which leads to various symptoms.
